Last Turns of the Season

Cardiac Bowl and a Superior Mountain

May 26, 2007

Craving what might be the last turns of the season, John and I set out for what is usually one of the last snow hold-outs in the Wasatch- Cardiac Bowl.  With a skiff a fresh snow earlier in the week we caught it in pime conditions despite the low snow year.  Not quite corn, but not quite slush.  The best of both worlds led us directly off the summit of Mount Superior and into the heart of the Wasatch.  Crazy good skiing; just a month too soon.

Our Goal- the center chute/gully descending north from the summit of Mt. Superior into Cardiac Bowl

(the right hand chute in the photo, with rock island, just off the pointed summit in the picture)

John climbing the perpetual east ridge of Superior.

Cardiac Ridge emerging from its winter blanket; Wildcat Ridge and then Antelope Island in the far distance.

John feeling out the tepid first turn.

Out of the excellent gully the slope angle eased and delivered some fine late season corn-age.

John laying them down…

Ah, the last turns of the season.

Like skiing the fresh whipping cream off a sponge cake.

Our spoons just barely visible in the right hand chute, and continuing just below to the left.

Bide my time til another spring and another corn harvest.
